“Nykolas Freeman died four hundred years ago. On a cold night, you can still hear his victims screaming.”

When Laura and her family move to a remote house in the English countryside, they have no idea of the macabre events that took place more than four centuries ago. It's said that a priest once hid in the walls of the house and was never seen again. Some say he hides there still...

Laura doesn't believe in ghosts, but when she and her sister start hearing scratching sounds and whispers from within the walls, it becomes clear that spirits in and around the house have some unfinished business. Is there really a priest still hidden somewhere nearby? Does the ghost of his tormentor still roam the forest? And why has Laura started to experience a series of intensely vivid waking dreams in which she finds herself in the same house, hundreds of years ago?

The Priest Hole is a horror novel about two sisters uncovering the dark forces in their new home, and about the divisions that once threatened to tear England apart. Contains violent scenes.

The Priest Hole Nykolas Freeman Book 1 eBook Amy Cross Reviews

Amy Cross has written a powerful, evocative and chilling yarn that will keep you up nights. She blends history with horror while telling a truly horrific story. Nicely done.
Love this book!!!!
Ended up staying up reading this book and the 2nd in the series overnight. Could not put this down. Will honestly say Amy Cross is my favorite author right now. I haven't found 1 of her books I didn't like. Ready for another book in this series.
Amy Cross writes well, usually good story lines and strange situations. This and the earlier Nylolas Freeman book are a bit bloody but it fits in the times. My only objection is the careless word checking. It seems spellcheck changed words. A bit annoying but you know what was meant. I've noticed this in a quite a few e books.
Yeah, I liked it. I did not love it. It's worth reading and the slipping over of timelines, like transparent papers stacked, was quite an interesting concept; also the way the violent past can therefore impinge upon the present. Of course the idea of blackest evil somehow living on and on is against spiritual beliefs ... but what do we know, after all. I'll have to read the second book in the series as well!
I really liked this book, the storyline is unique and interesting with loads of page turning action and suspense. I do wish Ms. Cross would invest in a thesaurus though, because I must have read the word "hissed" at least 35-40 times when she was describing the tone of voice of her characters. It was rather irritating after the tenth time, and insufferable the rest of the times. But all in all, a very enjoyable book, and I'm about to begin part 2.
England has always been associated with witchcraft, DEMONS , Ghosts and ESPECIALLY Old Buildings with lots of History having to do with religious battles. This story will give you all this. A family buys an old mansion in the hope of turning it into a bed-breakfast Inn. The haunted mansion drives its owners and family members back into the past and they in the hopes of changing the future attempt to change the past. EVIL IS DRIVEN BY THE PAST..SOMETIMES IN THE NAME OF RELIGIOUS BETTERMENT. You will never look at old places the same way again. This SCARY, HORROR STORY WILL HAUNT YOU. ENJOY IT! I RECOMMEND.....
An interesting concept, which generates some suspense with the intertwining of two story lines that transpire in different centuries, one during the 17th-Century reign of King James and his literal and figurative witch hunt, the other in the modern-day England countryside. However, there are some problems, mostly having to do with the characters. For instance, a big identity twist is given away much too early. A more deft hand might have used this as a climactic moment to further tie the two plots together; instead, this early reveal somewhat telegraphs a revelation late in the story that should have taken the reader by surprise. Also, the mother's somewhat negligent behavior is completely unbelievable. In fact, the mother seems less like an adult than her teenage daughter, our protagonist, Laura. This is so blatant, that it seems as if it is going to be an essential part of the tale, but instead it merely serves to have Laura and her younger sister, Suzie, illogically left home alone whilst their mother leaves town overnight, thereby having the pair isolated in an obviously haunted house. This, after Suzie has gotten a) trapped behind the walls on their first day in their new home, and b) lost in the woods, and Laura has had a fainting episode that left her bloodied, scared, and confused, and then convinces her mother to have the walls torn out in search of bones! Such flaws detract greatly from the story. That said, there are some chills to be had, several scenes of shocking brutality and inhumanity, some excellent dialogue in the 17th-century setting (although there are some glaring anachronisms and contemporary idioms) and the basic story is intriguing. The author has talent to be sure, but needs a bit of work with her authorial sleight of hand. With some re-writing, this could be a fantastic book.
